Reading                                            Mark 4:35–41

Hymn #463                                       How Firm a Foundation

1 How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord,
is laid for your faith in God’s excellent Word!
What more can be said than to you God hath said,
to you who for refuge to Jesus have fled?

2 “Fear not, I am with thee, O be not dismayed,
for I am thy God, and will still give thee aid;
I’ll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand,
upheld by my righteous, omnipotent hand.

3 “When through the deep waters I call thee to go,
the rivers of sorrow shall not overflow;
for I will be near thee, thy troubles to bless,
and sanctify to thee thy deepest distress.

4 “When through fiery trials thy pathway shall lie,
my grace, all sufficient, shall be thy supply;
the flame shall not hurt thee; I only design
thy dross to consume, and thy gold to refine.

5 “The soul that on Jesus hath leaned for repose,
I will not, I will not desert to its foes;
that soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake,
I’ll never, no, never, no, never forsake.”

Affirmation of Faith  The Apostles Creed (Traditional)

I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,

born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and

buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he

ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right had of God the Father Almighty;

from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy Catholic Church; the communion of saints;

the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Hymn #819                                            Be Still My Soul

1 Be still, my soul: the Lord is on thy side.
Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain.
Leave to thy God to order and provide,
who through all changes faithful will remain.
Be still, my soul: thy best, thy heavenly Friend
through thorny ways leads to a joyful end.

2 Be still, my soul: thy God doth undertake
to guide the future surely as the past.
Thy hope, thy confidence let nothing shake;
all now mysterious shall be bright at last.
Be still, my soul: the waves and winds still know
his voice who ruled them while he dwelt below.

3 Be still, my soul: the hour is hastening on
when we shall be forever with the Lord;
when disappointment, grief, and fear are gone,
sorrow forgot, love’s purest joys restored.
Be still, my soul: when change and tears are past
all safe and blessed we shall meet at last.

Full Text for Confirmation and Commissioning

 Confirmation

Hear the words of our lord, Jesus Christ, as they are recorded in Matthew’s Gospel.  “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.  Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you.  And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Trusting in the authority of Jesus Christ, and confident in his promises for all whom God calls, we engage in the work of making disciples through baptizing and teaching.

In the sacrament of Baptism, by water and the Spirit, we are made members of the church, the body of Christ, and joined to Christ’s ministry of love, peace, and justice.  Through the teaching and ritual of Confirmation, we accept for ourselves the cost and joy of discipleship, and we confirm the covenant our parents and church made when we were baptized.

(Elder presents Confirmands)

On behalf of the Session, I present Brooke W, Brooks B, Sophie T, Carley B, JosephineG , Lily B, Matthew W, Max F, and Nora W.

Do you affirm Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior?           I do.

Do you seek to be Jesus’ disciple, to follow his teaching and example, and to show his love?       I do.

Will you be a faith member of this congregation, sharing in its worship and ministry through your prayers and gifts, your study and service?             I will, with God’s help.

Commissioning for Mission Trip Teams

CALL TO DISCIPLESHIP
We are called by God to be the church of Jesus Christ,
a sign in the world today of what God intends for all humankind.

The call of Christ is to willing, dedicated discipleship.
Our discipleship is a manifestation of the new life we enter through baptism.
Discipleship is both a gift and a commitment, an offering and a responsibility.

This group being commissioned has responded to the call to discipleship through participation in this year’s youth mission trips.
PASTOR: (to participants)  God has called you to particular service. Show your purpose by answering these questions:

Do you welcome the responsibility of this service because you are determined to follow the Lord Jesus, to love neighbors, and to work for the reconciling of the world?  I do.

Do you promise, by the grace of God, to give yourselves to this calling, with diligence, energy, and love, and to be guided by the Spirit and the Word of God?  I do.

CHARGE:  Servants of Christ, accept the service with which you have been entrusted.  Do not neglect the gift that is in you.  Remember always that Jesus called you as friends as well as servants.  Attend to prayer, for without God you can do nothing.

COMMISSIONING PRAYER
O God, giver of all good gifts, we commend ourselves and our brothers and sisters to your constant love and guidance.  Fill them with grace and grant them the strength and peace of your Spirit.  Keep them safe in all their endeavors.  Give them such wisdom and tenderness that they may be powerful witnesses to your love, not only with the strangers they encounter, but with one another.  We pray these things in Christ’s name. Amen.
